Aggies dominate Big West with win over North Texas

By Doug Layne

The Utah State Aggies continue to dominate the Big West. The Aggies improved their record to 16-5 and are off to their best conference start ever as they defeated North Texas 83-70 in a game that turned out to be ugly.

"It's a win and I don't care how we got it," Coach Stew Morrill said.

The first half belonged to the Aggies as they jumped all over the Mean Green. The Aggies outscored the Mean Green and went on a 27-7 run to take a 37-14 lead with just over five minutes to play in the first half.

During the Aggie's first half run, nothing seemed to go right for North Texas, especially the conference's leading scorer Chris Davis who averages 21 points a game. He shot 1-8 in the first half from three point range.

The Aggies out-rebounded the Mean Green 23-19 in the first half. At the break, the Aggies had two players score in double-digits: Tony Brown 13 of his 19 points and Troy Rolle with 14 of his 19 points on the night . Bernard Rock had a season high of nine assists. At halftime he finished the game with 13.

The Aggies had a 24-point lead at the break, with the score at 47-23.

At the start of the second half, the Aggies picked up where they left off. They enjoyed their biggest lead of the game when Rock, who scored 10 points total, made back-to-back lay-ups to give USU a commanding 57-29 lead.

"We played good defense in the first half, and we got relaxed and didn't pressure like we did in the first half," Brad Willden, a sophomore forward for the Aggies said.

The Mean Green were then lead by Sam Funches he scored 6 out of his eight points on the night. He led North Texas on a 20-8 run to bring his team within 18 points, with a little under ten minutes to go in the game.

Then Davis led North Texas, with eight out of his 16 points to bring the Mean Green back within eight points as they trailed 70-78 with just under two minutes remaining. That was the closest they came to the Aggies as they scored the last five points.

The Aggies were out-rebounded 18-25 and shot only 42 percent in the second half.

"We gave up so many offensive boards, they played well and got the momentum," Morrill said.
