Today's word on journalism

Friday, March 21, 2008

News sources:

"A funny thing happened during the Iraq war: many Americans turned to the BBC for their TV news. They were looking for an alternative point of view -- something they couldn't find on domestic networks, which, in the words of the BBC's director general, 'wrapped themselves in the American flag and substituted patriotism for impartiality.'"

--Paul Krugman, columnist, New York Times (5/3/03)

NEWS NOTE: This Friday, to mark the fifth anniversary of the Iraq war, Logan will have its premiere screening of "A Soldier's Peace," an award-winning documentary about returning Iraq war National Guard Sgt. Marshall Thompson's 500-mile walk across Utah to express his conflicted feelings about the war. Thompson, a journalist, Mormon and Utah native, graduated from USU's JCOM program in 2002 and served in Iraq in 2005-06. He will be part of a panel after the film on "Activism -- An American Heritage." Friday, March 21, 7 p.m., Eccles Science Learning Center Auditorium

Hyde Park P&Z sends Foothill Heights plans forward to city council

By C. Jake Williams jake.williams@aggiemail.usu.edu

March 7, 2008 | HYDE PARK -- The city's Planning and Zoning Commission voted Wednesday night to send the Foothill Heights subdivision final plat to next week's City Council meeting for approval. In the interim, developer David Harris will work to fix a few concerns raised by the commission.

The major anxiety voiced pertained to commissioner concerns that residents would have to back out of the subdivision, located near 100 N. 700 East, onto corridor roads, also referred to as arterial or traffic-moving roads.

"The key to any corridor road is that people drive out onto them with their noses facing the road," said commission chairman Reed Elder.

The commission voted unanimously to move the subdivision plan forward with the contingency that the corridor issue is resolved and the Land Use Authority approves the latest drawings before being presented to city council. The LUA includes the P&Z chairman, mayor, a city council member, building inspector and city engineer.

Commissioner David James did not vote on the issue, to avoid a conflict of interest. James was involved with the sale of the land the proposed subdivision will rest atop. Commission alternate Dave Gatherum voted in his place.

The Hyde Park City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. March 12 in the city office building at 113 E. Hyde Park Lane.
