Today's word on journalism

Friday, March 21, 2008

News sources:

"A funny thing happened during the Iraq war: many Americans turned to the BBC for their TV news. They were looking for an alternative point of view -- something they couldn't find on domestic networks, which, in the words of the BBC's director general, 'wrapped themselves in the American flag and substituted patriotism for impartiality.'"

--Paul Krugman, columnist, New York Times (5/3/03)

NEWS NOTE: This Friday, to mark the fifth anniversary of the Iraq war, Logan will have its premiere screening of "A Soldier's Peace," an award-winning documentary about returning Iraq war National Guard Sgt. Marshall Thompson's 500-mile walk across Utah to express his conflicted feelings about the war. Thompson, a journalist, Mormon and Utah native, graduated from USU's JCOM program in 2002 and served in Iraq in 2005-06. He will be part of a panel after the film on "Activism -- An American Heritage." Friday, March 21, 7 p.m., Eccles Science Learning Center Auditorium

March 5, 2008 | The Spectrum careers for seniors Jaycee Carroll, Stephen DuCharme and Kris Clark culminated with a perfect regular season record Monday night. Utah State (21-9, 10-4 WAC) defeated Fresno State 79-66.

Carroll scored 33 points, including six 3-pointers, before coach Stew Morrill took him out of the game with under a minute remaining. The Spectrum crowd responded with a drawn-out and heart-fell standing ovation. Carroll also had five rebounds, three steals, a block, and hit all seven free throws he attempted.

"That was a good way to finish," said Carroll. "The important thing is we won."

DuCharme had one of his best games this season in response to Morrill's decision to start the senior. DuCharme scored 13, rebounded four balls and blocked one shot in 20 minutes of action.

"It was great to have [DuCharme] play so well," said Morrill.

Fresno State guard Kevin Bell single handedly kept the Bulldogs within striking distance. Bell shot 13-of-19 from the field for 31 points. Bell hit three 3-pointers and was never relegated to the Bulldog bench.

"We had no answer for Bell. We have had no answer for him for several years now," said Morrill. "I'm sure they're glad Jaycee Carroll is a senior and I'm damn glad Kevin Bell is a senior."

The Aggies now turn their attention to Thursday's important conference matchup at Boise State. The Broncos lead the Aggies by two in the win column and one in losses. A win against Boise State, if followed by a win at Idaho Saturday, will secure the Aggies a No. 1 seed in the WAC tournament in Las Cruces, N.M.

"There's a lot on the line, a lot to play for," said Carroll.

After Monday's win, Carroll paid tribute to the Spectrum by kissing the court.

"I saw 'em do it on TV," said Carroll.
